DR JOHN SMITH Speaker, Cultural Anthropologist, Author, Advocate, Biker
When U2 toured played Melbourne in December 2010, Bono mentioned his good mate “Smithy” twice from the stage to the assembled crowd, dedication a song to this great Australian Speaker. His message goes to the heart of the ethical and practical dilemmas encountered by businesses concerned with leadership, profit and performance.

Be warned - this charismatic outlaw, and founder of the God’s Squad Motor Cycle Club, is one of Australia’s most unusual and unorthodox speakers. He commands not only the respect of Australia’s outlaw biker gangs, but also corporate Australia. He has spoken in Australia and around the world at music and arts festivals, has shared the stage with former President Jimmy Carter and has addressed the United Nations Human Rights Commission.

He’s been arrested, sentenced to death and narrowly missed execution (in part due to the involvement of the media) in the Philippines in the 1980’s for defending the rights of rural peasants. He’s written five books and has another two in the final stages of editing.

Rebels, Outlaws, Misfits … and other resources your business can’t do without! In an exciting presentation, rich in anecdotes from an extraordinary life spent amongst society’s outlaws, Smithy offers corporate advice from unexpected and unorthodox sources, and reveals the promise of unconventional risk-taking.  As a keynote address, or in-depth workshop presentation, John Smith weaves anecdote, academic research, historical analysis, cultural anthropology and spiritual perspective to deliver management skills that business school never taught you.

Is Darth Vader Lurking in the Board Room?  In this presentation, Dr. John Smith confronts creativity gone wrong - the ‘Dark Side of the Force’ - and its hold on some businesses.  In a humorous and illuminating presentation, Dr. John discusses the right use of the ‘Energising Force’ so that genius, creativity and organizational strength may enhance and not destroy the enterprise and the surrounding social matrix.

Investing in Social Capital – Surprising Dividends Was the would-be Prime Minister just making political capital, or is former treasurer Peter Costello’s ‘Social Capital’ something that business needs to get serious about? Dr. John Smith explains that, just like the body’s circulatory system which spreads lifeblood to our extremities, society and business suffers when social capital fails to circulate through our economic system.

Feeling Good About Doing Bad – Time for a Corporate Reality Check Why is it that in international performance assessments, American math’s and science students are sixteenth and seventeenth respectively in performance, but first in self-esteem? In contrast, Asian students score among the best in performance, but are lowest in self-esteem. Dr. John Smith, business anthropologist, reveals the myths and self-delusion that enable us to feel good about poor performance. He exposes the mission statements and ethics codes that conceal reality, and the exhilaration and sustainable profit of ‘doing it right.’
